Last Thursday Mrs Mackenzie, Mrs Grainger, Mr Petch and Miss Larkin went to the book launch for the Therapy Focus sixth children's storybook in the Help a Child Grow storybook series, in celebration of one of our students winning a place in the Entitled 'Jake Rides the Rollercoaster'. It features characters with disabilities and encourages young readers to look past differences in others and celebrate the unique talents of every individual. The illustrations featured in the storybook were created by WA primary school students selected as winners in the 2013 Help a Child Grow Art Competition. The 20 winning students were awarded on stage at Westfield Carousel shopping centre.

About the Art Competition...
The Help a Child Grow Art Competition aims to help children understand disability, including the needs and differences of children with disabilities, whilst emphasising the importance of fundamental similarities. Targeting primary school children, the project imparts key messages and values at an age when attitudes are shaped for life. While providing a fun, engaging and educational classroom activity, the Art Competition and associated teaching resources encourage children to focus on what peers with disabilities can do, not a perceived lack of ability or skills.Active throughout Western Australian primary schools for the past 10 years, the Art Competition has grown significantly from a modest 50 entries in its inaugural year, to more than 5,000 in recent years. Schools as far south as Albany and as far north as the Pilbara have embraced the key messages of the Art Competition, submitting colourful and creative works of art.
